Arrival

Austria. All other nationals require a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended length of stay. Many foreign nationals do not require a visa for stays not exceeding 3 months. Check with the Austrian embassy or consulate in your country of origin. Under the Schengen Agreement, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain will respect any visa granted by Austria and vice versa. Children must have their own passport or be registered on one of their parent's passports, in which case they must be accompanied by the passport-holder. Since 1 April 1998, as a rule, border controls are no longer made at the borders to the Schengen states Germany and Italy. This also applies at the Austrian airports for flights to other Schengen states. To be able to present proof of identification in case of random control checks, travellers must carry their travel documents in the Schengen region as well.

Airport Taxis are taxis specially designated for transport only to and from the airport. They must be reserved in advance and charge a fixed price (incl. luggage) without a surcharge for the empty journey.

Customs Formalities for Entry into Austria by Train: When travelling in sleeping cars or couchettes a form available from the train conductor must be filled out in advance.

Communication

Telekom Austria offers a broad range of tariffs. Calling cards are available at all post offices and in tobacconists' shops (Tabak Trafiken). There are also a number of other communication providers in Austria for fixed as well as mobile telephone networks. GSM mobiles may be used in Austria, as there are GSM networks in the 900 MHz range and 1800 MHz range.

The Austrian press supports many foreign newspapers and periodicals in addition to national publications. The ORF (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation) is the national radio and TV broadcast station. ORF operates 2 state-wide TV programmes (ORF1 and ORF2) round the clock.

Private domestic TV channels and several foreign TV programmes can be received through cable and satellite connection. With the ever- growing ORF ON Network, the ORF operates the largest Austrian online medium whose contents range from up-to-date news to one of the largest online youth communities in the German-speaking region.

Transport

Rental cars can be hired at all airports, major railway stations and in cities where Budget, AVIS, Europcar-Interrent, Hertz are represented among other rental companies. International car rental agencies have reservation offices in many countries and as such, tourists can book reservations out of their own country at special rates. As a rule, before renting, the driver must have had a driving license (that is valid for Austria) for at least one year. For several groups of vehicles a minimum age of 21 to 25 years is a prerequisite. Please note: toll stickers are required on all vehicles on Austria's motorways and highways.

Special Regulation for Rental Cars out of Switzerland: Persons with residence in the EU can use a vehicle rented in Switzerland (by means of a written contract) to travel into Austria for a duration of 8 days from the enforcement of the rental contract in the entire toll region of the European Union for private or professional (however not for commercial) purposes.

The Austrian Federal Railway network has a length of about 5,700 km and is directly connected to the European railway network with connections between almost all European countries.

Major airports with daily national and international connections are found in Wien-Schwechat, Graz, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Linz and Salzburg.

Various excursion services operate several routes on the Danube as well as on a number of Austria's lakes.

The public bus transportation network in Austria includes more than 2,800 scheduled routes. Almost all places relevant to tourism can be reached by bus.

The taxis in the larger cities are provided with an officially controlled meter. The rate is calculated according to kilometres driven, as well as time. In Vienna, no additional fee is charged for luggage. For taxis from Vienna to the airport (please indicate 'taxi to airport' when ordering) the sum of about € 10 is added to the fare to cover the return journey.

Health Facilities

Emergency Numbers are as follows:
Ambulance/Doctor on call: Tel. 144
Medical radio service: Tel. 141
Mountain rescue service: Tel. 140

Austria has no shortage of modern health facilities to serve those requiring medical attention. Pharmacies operate on a rotational system for night and Sunday duty; when closed a notice is displayed giving the addresses of the nearest pharmacies that are open.

Health Insurance Coverage: Insured persons of the EWR, which includes EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, as well Switzerland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Yugoslavia, Croatia and Macedonia, in urgent cases can use their holiday insurance coverage form (obtained from their health insurer before starting their holiday) for medical care in Austria to the same benefits as those granted to persons insured in Austria. Information is available at the respective health insurance company in the member state.
